The Tauernkliniken
are making history

Over 450 years of history at Zell am See

The first nursing home was first mentioned in 1573 and was located in Kreuzgasse, right in Zell am See. In 1976, the hospital opened at its current location on the northern shore of the lake.

Surrounded by the beautiful mountain landscape of the Pinzgau region with the Hohe Tauern and Lake Zell, a lot has happened over the last 450 years – from a leprosarium to a modern inland hospital with eight medical departments and a specialist focus.

Timeline Tauernklinikum Zell am See.

For over 450 years, the Tauernkliniken hospitals have shaped healthcare in the Pinzgau region – from the historic leprosarium and market hospital to modern hospital sites in Zell am See and Mittersill. Today, both hospitals are high-performance, modern facilities with specialised departments, significant construction projects and a clear focus on medical quality and regional care.

Tauernklinikum Mittersill –
from market hospital to modern leader

In 1908, the tranquil market hospital opened under the name "Mittersill Asylum for the Sick", which was common at the time. Since the hospital's modest beginnings, the Tauernklinikum Mittersill has established itself as a central element of healthcare in Oberpinzgau. Today, patients are treated in a wide range of medical specialities. The most important renovation to date is currently underway, with construction work scheduled for completion in 2026. The already modernised acute geriatrics and remobilisation department is a central focus of the location.

Tauernklinikum Mittersill - Renovation
Since 1908, our hospital in Mittersill has stood for care and medical treatment — back then as a refuge for those in need, today as a future-oriented health centre. With the upcoming new building and comprehensive modernisation, we want to ensure that our care continues to meet the highest standards tomorrow.
