The orthopaedics and traumatology team at Tauernklinikum supports patients on their journey back to an active life. With the highest level of professional expertise, modern medicine and personal care, we treat injuries, joint wear and diseases of the entire musculoskeletal system – with the aim of maintaining mobility and ensuring quality of life.
As one of the most efficient facilities in our region, we care for over 5,600 inpatients annually, perform around 50,000 outpatient treatments and record approximately 3,600 surgical procedures. This experience makes our team a reliable partner in all matters relating to orthopaedics and trauma surgery.

Our focus areas

Traumatology
We offer conservative and surgical treatment for fresh injuries and the consequences of injuries to the extremities – including the hand, thorax, spine and pelvis. In close cooperation with other specialist departments, we also treat complex injuries to the head and abdomen.

Orthopaedics
Our team treats the entire spectrum of orthopaedic disorders of the musculoskeletal system conservatively and surgically – from joint wear and tear to malalignments and degenerative changes.

About the person
Prof. Dr. Jochen Franke is a specialist in surgery with a focus on trauma surgery and a specialist in orthopaedics and trauma surgery with the additional designation "special trauma surgery".
He has been head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Tauernklinikum since October 2023.
Prior to this, Prof. Franke worked at BG Klinik Ludwigshafen for many years, most recently as senior physician in the Acute Traumatology and Emergency Medicine section and as managing senior physician at the Clinic for Trauma Surgery and Orthopaedics. His clinical and scientific expertise lies in particular in the treatment of complex joint injuries, pelvic and spinal surgery, intraoperative 3D imaging and the technological advancement of surgical procedures.
As an adjunct professor at Heidelberg University and visiting professor at the Medical University of Vienna, Prof. Franke is also heavily involved in teaching and research. He was a founding member and head of the MINTOS (Medical Imaging and Navigation in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery) research group and author of more than 150 scientific publications.
In addition, he is active in several national and international professional associations, including as chairman of the Working Group for Intraoperative Imaging and Technology Integration (AGiTEC) of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU) and as a member of the Advisory Editorial Board of the European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery.
With his many years of experience, his passion for modern medicine and his high standards of quality, Prof. Franke stands for patient-oriented, scientifically sound and future-oriented orthopaedics and trauma surgery at the Tauernklinikum.
