The Department of Internal Medicine at Tauernklinikum offers a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art diagnostics, therapy and care – with a total of 124 beds at the Zell am See and Mittersill locations. This includes an internal medicine intensive care unit (IMCU), a dialysis department and an acute geriatric ward with palliative care beds.
Our experienced team of doctors specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the internal organs. The focus is always on the person as a whole – with all physical, psychological and social aspects.
The department focuses on cardiovascular (cardiology), kidney and high blood pressure disorders (nephrology), digestive organs (gastroenterology), respiratory organs (pneumology), rheumatology and other autoimmune diseases, diabetes, geriatrics and other internal medicine specialities.

About the person
Associate Professor Dr. René R. Wenzel has headed the Department of Internal Medicine at the Tauern Clinic in Zell am See and Mittersill since 2003.
Under his leadership, the team cares for over 10,000 patients annually – both inpatients and outpatients – and covers the entire spectrum of internal medicine, including cardiology, nephrology, intensive care and laboratory medicine, as well as autoimmune diseases.
Following his training at the University Hospitals of Essen and Bern, and the renowned Mayo Clinic in the USA, Associate Professor Wenzel specialized in heart, kidney, and hypertension diseases. His clinical and scientific work combines sound medical expertise with modern diagnostics and individualized patient care.
As a long-time lecturer at the University Hospital of Duisburg-Essen, the Medical University of Vienna, and the Paracelsus Medical Private University of Salzburg, he is deeply committed to the training of future physicians. Furthermore, he is a board member of the Austrian Society of Hypertension (ÖGH), a recognized expert in cardiovascular and kidney diseases, and the medical-scientific director of the nursing school in Zell am See.
With over two decades of leadership experience, international training, and a strong focus on quality, empathy and teamwork, Doz. Wenzel represents an internal medicine that views people holistically – competent, reliable, and humane.
