The Department of Internal Medicine at Tauernklinikum offers a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art diagnostics, therapy and care – with a total of 124 beds at the Zell am See and Mittersill locations. This includes an internal medicine intensive care unit (IMCU), a dialysis department and an acute geriatric ward with palliative care beds.

Our experienced team of doctors specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the internal organs. The focus is always on the person as a whole – with all physical, psychological and social aspects.

The department focuses on cardiovascular (cardiology), kidney and high blood pressure disorders (nephrology), digestive organs (gastroenterology), respiratory organs (pneumology), rheumatology and other autoimmune diseases, diabetes, geriatrics and other internal medicine specialities.

Internal Medicine Intensive Care Unit (IMCU)

Medical care in life-threatening situations – from acute treatment to intensive care monitoring and therapy.

Heart and circulation (cardiology)

Diagnosis and treatment of heart disease, heart valve defects, arrhythmias and heart failure. Implantation of pacemakers and follow-up care.

Kidney and autoimmune diseases (nephrology)

Treatment of kidney and high blood pressure disorders, autoimmune diseases (e.g. vasculitis, Wegener's disease, lupus erythematosus) as well as preparation and follow-up care for kidney transplants.

Dialysis – renal replacement therapy

Performance of modern blood purification procedures (haemodialysis, haemodiafiltration, plasmapheresis), peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and care of transplant patients (heart, kidney, liver, pancreas).

Metabolism and hormones (endocrinology/diabetology)

Diagnosis and treatment of metabolic disorders – in particular diabetes mellitus and lipid metabolism disorders. Training and support for insulin pump and closed-loop systems.

Acute geriatrics and remobilisation (Mittersill)

Interdisciplinary rehabilitation of elderly patients after serious illnesses or operations – with the aim of regaining independence and quality of life.

Digestive organs (gastroenterology)

Diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Endoscopic procedures (gastroscopy and colonoscopy, ERCP) and specialised outpatient clinic for chronic inflammatory bowel diseases.

Clinical pharmacology

Individual advice on complex medications, interaction analyses and optimisation of drug therapy.

Respiratory organs (pneumology)

Treatment of lung and bronchial diseases using state-of-the-art functional diagnostics (spirometry, spiroergometry, bronchoscopy).

Blood and blood-forming organs (haematology/oncology)

Diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders and tumours in close cooperation with Oncology Salzburg.
