In the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry at Tauernklinikum, we offer outpatient and surgical eye care in line with the latest standards – for the regional population and beyond.

Our main services include the treatment of cataracts and glaucoma, retinal and eyelid surgery, strabismus treatment and conservative retinology. In addition, we specialise in oculoplastic surgery, orthoptics (vision training) and strabismus surgery. Our treatments are based on current medical guidelines and state-of-the-art technology. Thanks to microsurgical methods and minimally invasive procedures, many operations can be performed on an outpatient or day clinic basis.

Main surgical services

Cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, strabismus surgery (MISS technique).

Oculoplastic surgery

Eyelid, tear duct and eye socket surgery, reconstructive surgery on young children and elderly people following accidents or tumours, surgical procedures on the conjunctiva (e.g. pterygium surgery).

Treatments of the eye surface

Diseases of the conjunctiva, cornea, eyelids, specialised diagnosis and treatment of dry eye syndrome.

Inflammatory disease of the inner eye (uveitis)

We have extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory diseases of the inner eye. We have established cooperation with doctors from other specialist areas for the necessary collaboration. Treatment options include eye drops, medication administered into the eye and systemic therapy with immunomodulatory drugs.

Retina

Diagnostics and conservative therapy, laser therapy, intravitreal drug administration (age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinal diseases, vascular diseases).

Glaucoma

Diagnostics, conservative and surgical treatment, laser therapy on the ciliary body and chamber angle, filtration surgery, microimplants.

Vision training (orthoptics)

Diagnosis and treatment of congenital and acquired strabismus, eye movement disorders, amblyopia. Assessment of visual acuity and prescription of glasses for children, prescription of special glasses for adults. Strabismus surgery.

About the person

Dr. Martin Emesz has been head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry at Tauernklinikum Zell am See since 2016.

After completing his training at the University Eye Clinic in Salzburg, he worked there for many years as a specialist and senior physician, most recently specialising in oculoplastic surgery. Study visits to Munich and London deepened his international expertise.

His surgical focus is on reconstructive and aesthetic eyelid and orbital surgery, lacrimal duct surgery, tumour surgery, and cataract and strabismus surgery. In addition to his clinical work, Dr Emesz is scientifically active, the author of numerous specialist publications, a committed lecturer at Austrian universities and a speaker at national and international conferences.

As a member of several national and international professional associations and the Salzburg State Medical Council, Dr Emesz is committed to the highest quality standards, modern treatment methods and patient-centred ophthalmology.
